Conference "The Future of Digital Provenance Research – Dreams and Realities"

The conference will provide a platform for critical reflection on current methods, technologies and practical applications for digitally supported provenance research.
Interdisciplinary perspectives will be brought together and innovative approaches highlighted in order to strengthen the transfer of knowledge between research and practice.

The opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence and machine learning will be examined, as will ethical, legal and political issues. Selected case studies as well as projects from cultural heritage organisations and the research sector will shed light on ‘Dreams and Realities’ from a practical perspective.

In her keynote „‘Navigating Uncertainty’ in historiographical practice: How do I know what I (don’t) know, and how do I talk about it?“ Prof. Dr Silke Schwandt (University of Bielefeld) discusses how to deal with (methodological) uncertainties using examples from historical research – after all, digital history is fundamentally concerned with the challenges posed by the digital realm for the practices of knowledge creation and dissemination.

More than 30 speakers will present their papers on the topics of ‘AI, Automation and Development’, ‘Structuring and Networking’, ‘Digital Representations and Tools for Provenance Research’, ‘Uncertainty, Evidence and Digital Knowledge Production’, and ‘Bias, Governance and Responsibility’.

In addition, poster presentations provide insights into various projects and approaches. A workshop on the sustainability of digital provenance research focuses on the question: What remains once a project is over?

As well as providing opportunities for professional exchange and discussion, the conference offers numerous networking opportunities. On the first day of the conference, we are also hosting an evening reception at the Foundation’s premises.
