The Help Desk offers advice and assistance to victims of the Nazi regime and their descendants on questions relating to Nazi theft of cultural property. Serving as a central and initial low-threshold point of contact in Germany, it is aimed in particular at people whose place of residence is outside Germany and who are unfamiliar with German procedures, especially in connection with cultural federalism. The Help Desk seeks to provide support in taking initial steps as well as providing further contacts and information. We will also be happy to help initiate discussions with museums and other institutions.

International Provenance Research Day will take place for the eighth time on 8 April 2026. According to the Provenance Research Association, more than 130 cultural institutions in eight countries have registered their participation.

The broad-ranging programme currently includes 93 in-person events as well as various online formats, dedicated primarily to cultural property seized as a result of Nazi persecution, cultural goods from colonial contexts and objects expropriated in the Soviet occupation zone/GDR, as well as the histories of items and collections in general.

The collaborative organisation of the event involving researchers from different institutions, including museums, libraries and universities reflects the successful efforts of the Provenance Research Association to boost transparency and networking within what remains a comparatively young research community. The latter has set itself the goal of shedding light on the provenance of cultural objects, in public institutions and beyond.

The awareness day has been held on the second Wednesday in April every year since 2019.

Registration is open until 8 April 2026! All institutions involved in provenance research in the broadest sense are invited to take part, as well as provenance researchers worldwide.
