The German Lost Art Foundation has published a new issue of the periodical Provenance & Research. In preparation for the Foundation's 2025 spring conference entitled 1945 – The struggle over art. Cultural property between loss, relocation and restitution, the latest volume is likewise dedicated to the year 1945.
2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Commemorating the victims and reflecting on the immense human suffering caused by this conflict also involves mourning the loss of important and irreplaceable works of art as well as other items of material culture. This volume explores the ongoing challenges and consequences of the wartime and post-war displacement of cultural property, as well as pursuing unresolved questions regarding the whereabouts of museum, library and archival holdings from both public and private collections.
The print version can be ordered from Sandstein Verlag Dresden (print edition), while the electronic version is available for download in open access on perspectivia.net under DOI 10.25360/01-2024-00010.
The spring conference will take place on 31 March and 01 April 2025 at Berlin State Library. See here for a save-the-date.
The periodical Provenance & Research is published annually, with each issue also providing information on the latest findings from projects funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. It is aimed at media representatives and policymakers interested in the field, experts who work in archives, libraries and museums, and also research institutions and the art trade.
