The German Lost Art Foundation has published a new issue of the periodical Provenance & Research. The newly issued volume bears the title Gespaltene Biografien [Divided Biographies].
The end of the Second World War marked a new beginning for all who had endured war and persecution. Yet despite the idea that this supposedly enabled a completely fresh start in 1945, officials of the Nazi state were often able to continue their careers after the war – museums and art dealerships were no exception. This volume examines biographies that are “divided” in various ways. Above all, it focuses on individuals who were entangled with the Nazi system yet were still highly influential in shaping the post-war art world – life stories which suggest that continuity was more often the rule than the exception.
The volume can be ordered (print edition) from Sandstein Verlag Dresden; is also available as an electronic edition on perspectivia.net under DOI 10.25360/01-2025-00067 in open access.
The periodical Provenance & Research is published annually, with each issue also providing information on the latest findings from projects funded by the German Lost Art Foundation. It is aimed at media representatives and policymakers interested in the field, experts who work in archives, libraries and museums, and also research institutions and the art trade.
