New release: “Resist, Reclaim, Retrieve”

The German Lost Art Foundation has published volume 4 of the "Provenire" series.

The German Lost Art Foundation has published the fourth volume in the scientific series “Provenire” by De Gruyter.

The debate on how to engage with collections from colonial contexts may seem new, but individuals, groups, and states have protested the removal and theft of cultural property and ancestral remains since the dawn of colonial expansion. Already more than 150 years ago, they defended their heritage and sometimes successfully reclaimed it. Why has this struggle often been overlooked? What can we learn from its long history? The present volume gathers papers from a conference on this topic as well as new contributions. Researchers and experts from the Global South and North examine historical returns, discuss case studies, and analyze significant moments and dynamics.

„Resist, Reclaim, Retrieve. The Long History of the Struggle for the Restitution of Cultural Heritage and Ancestral Remains Taken under Colonial Conditions“, published by Larissa Förster, Jan Hüsgen and Sarah Fründt (Publisher De Gruyter, 202 pages, 49 euros, available in paperback and as an e-book).
