Description:

The Lippe State Library (Lippische Landesbibliothek/Theologische Bibliothek und Mediothek) is the universal and regional library for the district Lippe and is based at Detmold. Since Lippe became part of the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia in 1948 the library is primarily financed by Landesverband Lippe. From 1933 to 1945 Dr. Eduard Wiegand (1893-1979) was head of the library. He was a National Socialist and one of its first party members in the region. Wiegand enforced the library's alignment with the National Socialist's agenda. In the "Zeitgeschichtliche Sammlung" he aimed to collect books and sources that documented the history of the NSDAP. At the same time he assembled "forbidden" books and printing materials that were published or collected by "opponents" of Nazi-ideology (e.g. trade unions, Freemason lodges, Jewish communities). Proceeding from the "Zeitgeschichtliche Sammlung" the Lippe State Library seeks to investigate their collections for looted cultural property and to find a just and fair solution in accordance with the "Washington Principles" (1998) and the "Gemeinsame Erklärung" (1999).
