Deadline 31 May: Applications for the master’s degree programme “Provenance Research and the History of Collecting”
The master’s degree programme aims to qualify students for this dynamic field of research. Provenance research is understood as contextual research that cuts across eras and disciplines, revealing the complexity of the values attributed to art and cultural assets in the context of different societies and social constellations as well as by individuals. Closely related to this is the history of private and institutional collecting, which is another focus of the degree programme. The courses cover all epochs as well as both European and non-European regions.
The compulsory part of the degree programme includes modules in the field of art history and law. One central element of the programme is the module “Provenance Research in Practice”, which includes an excursion lasting several days, the opportunity of an internship over a period of several weeks and a practical exercise in cooperation with partner institutions.
In order to be admitted, applicants must be professionally qualified with a first degree in art history or else a related subject with at least 60 credit points in art history. Based in the subject area of art history, the programme is offered by the transdisciplinary research unit Provenance Research, Art and Cultural Property Law, which was established in 2018. The German Lost Art Foundation collaborates closely with this centre of excellence at the University of Bonn.
