Research discipline “Nazi-looted art”
In addition to public institutions, private institutions (e.g. museums, archives, associations, companies) and private individuals in Germany are also eligible to apply for funding in the research area of “Nazi-looted art”. The Foundation promotes systematic inventory checks and fundamental research on the historical context of Nazi cultural property looting, as well as the indexing of archival holdings and the reconstruction of private collections that were seized, divided up, or destroyed as a result of persecution during the Nazi regime.
The provenance clarification of private collections is also eligible for funding if there is a suspicion of a Nazi persecution-related seizure.
Since January 2019, the Foundation has also been funding projects designed to identify the heirs of objects from collections seized as a result of persecution for which provenance research has already been conducted. The goal of such applications with this funding priority should be to reach a just and fair resolution with heirs in accordance with the 1998 Washington Principles and the 1999 Joint Declaration.

Research Area “Colonial Contexts”
Since the beginning of 2019, the Foundation has been funding long-term and short-term projects on cultural and collection materials from colonial contexts.
Those deemed eligible to apply are institutions under public law and private institutions that are recognized as charities under Section 59 in conjunction with Section 52 of the German Fiscal Code. The applicant institution must be based in Germany and collect, preserve, or research cultural and collection materials from colonial contexts. These include museums, universities and other research institutions.
On the one hand, the Foundation funds the concrete research of objects, bundles, and larger inventories; on the other hand, it also promotes basic research and research on the historical context concerning questions that are of fundamental importance for provenance research beyond individual objects. Not only individual projects but also collaborative projects are funded. Particular attention is paid to cooperation with the societies and countries of origin, which can be involved in the projects through different forms of collaboration.
