Award for Hermann Simon

Chairman of the Advisory Board “Nazi confiscated art” receives Cross of Merit 1st Class.

Dr. Dr. h.c. Hermann Simon, Chair of the Founding Committee “Nazi confiscated art”, has been awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. This was in recognition of his decades-long service to the promotion and raising of awareness of Jewish life, as well as a diverse range of voluntary work he undertook in retirement, including for the German Lost Art Foundation, with which he has been closely associated as a valuable advisor since its founding.

Hermann Simon was born in Berlin in 1949. His mother survived Nazi persecution underground, and it was to her life story that he dedicated his book Untergetaucht, which has been published in numerous editions. After studying history at Humboldt University, Hermann Simon’s career included working at the Coin Cabinet of the National Museums in Berlin before he became founding director of the Stiftung Neue Synagoge Berlin – Centrum Judaicum. We are thrilled that Hermann Simon has received this great honour and offer him our sincere congratulations!
