Mannheim University Library launches research project

Historical book holdings to be systematically investigated for Nazi-looted property.

Mannheim University Library has started a provenance research project to record, visualise and, where possible, return suspected cases of Nazi-looted property from its historical book collections. The project is funded by the German Lost Art Foundation.

A public library was established in Mannheim as early as the end of the 19th century, combining elements of Wittelsbach Court Library in the Electoral Palatinate with donations from private libraries and association libraries. In 1921, this collection formed the basis for the 70,000-volume Municipal Palace Library housed in the library hall of Mannheim Palace. After being transferred to the Scientific Public Library in 1954, the collection was then donated to Mannheim University Library in 1971.

The recently initiated project will involve a systematic analysis of the Municipal Palace Library holdings by Mannheim University Library with the aim of identifying items of cultural property that were confiscated from Jewish citizens during the Nazi era from 1933 onwards.
