Research area “Nazi-Looted Property”
In the research area “Nazi-Looted Property”, privately funded institutions (e.g. museums, archives, associations, companies) and private individuals in Germany are also eligible to apply in addition to public institutions. The Foundation provides funding for systematic inventory assessments and basic research on the historical context of Nazi cultural property confiscations as well as for the indexing of archive holdings and the reconstruction of private collections that were seized, divided up or destroyed under the Nazi regime as a result of persecution.
Clarification of the provenance of private collections is also eligible for funding if there is a suspicion of confiscation as a result of persecution.
Since January 2019, the Foundation has also funded projects that serve to identify the heirs of objects from collections seized as a result of persecution for which provenance research has already been carried out. The aim of proposals in this funding area should be to reach a just and fair settlement with the heirs in the spirit of the Washington Principles of 1998 and the Joint Declaration of 1999.

Research area “Colonial Contexts”
Since the beginning of 2019, the Foundation has funded long-term and short-term projects relating to cultural goods and collections from colonial contexts.
The following are eligible to apply: institutions under public law and private institutions that are recognized as non-profit organizations in accordance with § 59 in conjunction with § 52 of the German Fiscal Code (Abgabenordnung). The applicant institution must be based in Germany and collect, preserve or conduct research into cultural and collection material from colonial contexts. This includes museums, universities and other research institutions.
The Foundation provides funding for concrete research into objects, collections and larger holdings, but also supports basic research and research on the historical context where this concerns issues that are of fundamental importance to provenance research beyond specific objects. Both individual projects and consortium projects are funded. Special attention is given to cooperation with the societies and countries of origin, which can be involved in the projects through cooperation. As of this year, it is also possible to apply for funding for projects dealing with the indexing, cataloguing and analysis of archival records and documents.
