Save the Date: Podiumsdiskussion und digitale Konferenz "Die Peripherie im Zentrum" 13.-15. November 2022

This November, the German Lost Art Foundation is once again holding its annual autumn conference: the digital conference entitled Die Peripherie im Zentrum. Vergessenes, Verdrängtes und Vernachlässigtes in der Provenienzforschung (“The periphery at the centre. What gets forgotten, repressed and neglected in provenance research”) on 14 and 15 November will focus on provenance research beyond the major cities and institutions – in the countryside, in border regions and in smaller museums.

The focus is not on prominent works of art but on the frequently neglected objects such as household effects and belongings that were stolen from persecuted Jewish citizens during the National Socialist era. Rather than looking at the role of high-ranking National Socialist functionaries, light will be cast on the work done by museum curators in the provinces, for example. One particular focus will be on persecuted groups that have received little attention to date.

To start the conference, the Foundation will be holding a panel discussion in cooperation with Moses Mendelssohn Akademie Halberstadt on 13 November 2022 at Halberstadt Town Hall

Representatives of the Jewish community will speak on the topic Erneuerung aus der Erinnerung? Jüdisches Leben zwischen Tradition, Verfolgung und Neubeginn“ (“Renewal from memory? Jewish life between tradition, persecution and a new beginning”). The theme will be the revival of Jewish life today – especially in the periphery – and the question of how the reconstruction of Jewish history can contribute to this. The panel will be moderated by Stefan Nölke (MDR KULTUR editor) and broadcast two days later, on 15 November, on MDR KULTUR – Das Radio. The members of the panel will be as follows: Jutta Dick (Board of Directors of Moses Mendelssohn Akademie Foundation Halberstadt), Julia Hirsch (descendant of the Hirsch family from Halberstadt), Alfred Jacoby (architect of the new synagogue in Dessau and Honorary Chair of the Jewish Community in Offenbach am Main), State Rabbi Alexander Nachama (Jewish Community of Thuringia) and Hermann Simon (Founding Director of the New Synagogue Foundation Berlin – Centrum Judaicum).

Please note: there is a limit on the number of panel discussion participants. Furthermore, due to the pandemic, we are unable to guarantee that the event will take place on an in-person basis. However, it will be streamed live on the Foundation’s YouTube channel and will be available in the ARD audio library for a year after broadcast on MDR radio.

In mid-September, the detailed conference programme will be published on our digital event platform and on www.kulturgutverluste.de, and it will be possible to sign up for the conference and panel discussion.
We look forward to welcoming you to our conference. If you have any questions, please contact our colleague Heinrich Natho on 0391/727 763-23 or conference@kulturgutverluste.de
