Nazi-looted cultural property

Foundation Board of the German Lost Art Foundation approves amendments to funding guidelines

At its meeting on 2 November 2021, the Foundation Board of the German Lost Art Foundation adopted amendments to the funding guidelines for provenance research (regarding cultural property expropriated as a result of Nazi persecution).

The changes relate to the duration of the projects funded by the Foundation and the amount of funding available. Up until now, project funding has only been available for a period of 36 months. In future, this period will be increased to up to 60 months in justified exceptional cases.

The Executive Board of the German Lost Art Foundation will decide on funding approval up to a funding amount of EUR 350,000 – rather than the previous amount of EUR 300,000. Should this amount be exceeded in justified cases, the decision will be taken by the Foundation Board.

In addition, funding has been extended to include projects dedicated to the indexing, cataloguing and analysis of archival records and documents that are of fundamental importance beyond an individual case. This might include the retrodigitization of archival records and documents and also the development of digital infrastructures in justified exceptional cases. The Foundation is not able to take on permanent maintenance and upkeep of digital research infrastructures: this must be provided for by other means.

The funding guidelines will become effective as of 1 December 2021 as amended.
