25 years ago, more than 40 countries and numerous non-governmental organisations agreed to adopt the “Principles of the Washington Conference in Relation to Works of Art Confiscated by the National Socialists”. Since then, the approach to the handling of cultural property seized as a result of Nazi persecution has been geared towards a search for just and fair solutions.
After a quarter of a century, the focus should not primarily be on the past. Instead the aim will be to reflect on the role of the “Washington Principles” in provenance research and communication work in museums, libraries and other public institutions, as well as in connection with the restitution debate and the culture of remembrance.
Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.
