On the oc­ca­sion of In­ter­na­tion­al Holo­caust Re­mem­brance Day on 27 Jan­uary, the Min­is­ter of State for Cul­ture, Clau­dia Roth and the Arolsen Archives have called on all cit­i­zens in Ger­many to par­tic­i­pate in the dig­i­tal re­mem­brance project #ev­ery­name­counts.

The Mu­se­um Ange­wandte Kun­st in Frank­furt am Main opens its ex­hi­bi­tion The Col­lec­tion of Max­i­m­il­ian von Gold­schmidt-Roth­schild on 27 Jan­uary 2023. It is the first time the Frank­furt mu­se­um has ded­i­cat­ed an ex­hi­bi­tion to this pri­vate col­lec­tor and pa­tron and his once fa­mous art col­lec­tion. The his­to­ry of the col­lec­tion re­flects the life of the col­lec­tor, who was per­se­cut­ed as a Jew un­der Na­tion­al So­cial­ism.

For the sec­ond time, the Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion and the Ger­man Li­brary As­so­ci­a­tion are spon­sor­ing the cer­tifi­cate course on li­brary prove­nance re­search of­fered by the Cen­ter for Con­tin­u­ing Ed­u­ca­tion at the Freie Uni­ver­si­tät Berlin. The Com­mis­sion for Prove­nance Re­search and Prove­nance Cat­a­logu­ing of the Ger­man Li­brary As­so­ci­a­tion (dbv) is re­spon­si­ble for the con­tent of the course.

All con­tri­bu­tions from the dig­i­tal au­tumn con­fer­ence or­gan­ised by the Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion en­ti­tled Die Pe­riph­erie im Zen­trum. Vergessenes, Ver­drängtes und Ver­nach­läs­sigtes in der Prove­nien­z­forschung (“The pe­riph­ery at the cen­tre. What is for­got­ten, sup­pressed and ne­glect­ed in prove­nance re­search”) are now al­so avail­able in the form of an au­dio doc­u­men­ta­tion.

In its se­ries Work­ing Pa­per Deutsches Zen­trum Kul­turgutver­luste, the Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion has pub­lished a study en­ti­tled Kolo­niale Gewalt in Deutsch-Neuguinea und der Raub kul­tureller Ob­jek­te und men­schlich­er Über­reste (“Colo­nial vi­o­lence in Ger­man New Guinea and the loot­ing of cul­tur­al ob­jects and hu­man re­mains”).
Museum Director Dr. Markus Miller, Donatus Landgrave of Hesse and art historian Sven Pabstmann show suspect objects whose origin is currently being researched.

For the first time, the art col­lec­tions of the House of Hesse Cul­tur­al Foun­da­tion at Mu­se­um Schloss Fasaner­ie are be­ing ex­am­ined for items of cul­tur­al prop­er­ty in the mu­se­um hold­ings that were for­mer­ly owned by Jew­ish cit­i­zens and seized as a re­sult of Nazi per­se­cu­tion.

From De­cem­ber 2022, the Mu­se­um of Eu­ro­pean Cul­tures (MEK) Berlin will be­gin in­ves­ti­gat­ing and pro­cess­ing the Sá­mi col­lec­tion to­geth­er with Sá­mi re­searchers, artists and oth­er com­mu­ni­ty rep­re­sen­ta­tives as part of a prove­nance re­search project fund­ed by the Ger­man Lost Art Foun­da­tion.

Tiefen­bohrung: Eine an­dere Prove­nien­zgeschichte (“Deep drilling: a prove­nance his­to­ry with a dif­fer­ence”), pub­lished by Hat­je Cantz Ver­lag, tells the sto­ry of the ori­gin of cul­tur­al prop­er­ty in mu­se­ums. The book takes a close look at the paths, de­tours and dead ends tak­en by the hold­ings of the Ger­man Mu­se­um of Books and Writ­ing, col­lect­ed since 1884, be­fore be­ing stored in its de­pots. The fo­cus is on de­struc­tion and raids as well as do­na­tions.

The Düs­sel­dorf City Archives and the city’s Prove­nance Re­search Unit have com­plet­ed an ex­ten­sive joint project to in­dex mu­nic­i­pal files dat­ing back to the Nazi era (1933-1945). A dig­i­tal search aid is now avail­able which can be used by prove­nance re­searchers and oth­er in­ter­est­ed par­ties to con­duct on­line re­search and re­trieve archival records.
